The Diploma in Agribusiness Entrepreneurship and Management, offers an exciting learning platform for food and agricultural entrepreneurs to transform their enterprises into profitable entities.The market for fresh and processed food is increasing daily at an astronomical rate. Every day, the world spends billions of dollars purchasing vegetables, poultry products, juices, meats, snacks, flour and other food products for human consumption.

The Global Food and Agribusiness industry was valued at about $5 trillion by the World Bank in 2017, representing 10% of global consumer spending while the size of the Nigerian food market was valued in excess of N2 trillion. With the world population hitting 7.8 billion in 2020, the business of feeding humanity has remained an extremely lucrative one.

Since the turn of the millennium, the global food production industry has being continually influenced by dynamics in consumer behavior, growing continental populations and disruptive technologies. At the edge of this transformation is a huge demand for entrepreneurs that can develop smarter ways of producing foods and managing agribusiness operations profitably.

Modules

MODULE 1

Entrepreneurial Opportunities in the Agribusiness Value Chains

This module will expose participants to trending opportunities for impact investment and profitability in commercial farming, agro-processing & value addition, agricultural services, retail and trade. The mappings of the opportunities will be done based on market size, growth potentials and consumer dynamics. At the end of the module, class members will be able to clearly identify opportunities in upstream, midstream and downstream agribusiness as well as how to position themselves strategically.

MODULE 2

Understanding the Global Food Economy and Markets

This analytical module will explore the architecture of global food supply & distribution cycle,direction of consumer spending and factors influencing the preferences of global consumers of agricultural produce. The module will offer a broad based overview and also focus on practical trade analysis of specific commodities. Understanding the direction of global food trade and factors affecting global food systems will help participants to build data-driven agribusiness enterprises based on real time business intelligence.

MODULE 3

Strategic Management of Agribusiness Operations

To achieve desired results and performance level in agribusiness operations, entrepreneurs and managers must build their enterprises around the right business models. The module will equip participants with frameworks for developing and implementing agribusiness-specific business models for successful farming, aggregation, agro-commodity trade, contract production, Agri-investment portfolio management, food processing, agrifood import and export operations.

MODULE 4

Management of Opportunities and Operations in Arable Crop Production

This module will provide framework for management of commercial operations in cassava, rice, plantain, maize, orange flesh sweet potato and soybean. The classes will cover business plan development, farm labour management, production cost analysis, basic farm management principles for production success. At the end of this module, class members will be able to provide operational leadership for their team members and track direction of farm progress.

MODULE 5

Investment Opportunities in Cash Crop and Economic Trees

Economic trees are lifetime money spinners. Various cash crops have fruiting potentials ranging from one to thirty years or more in some instances. This module will provide insight into three selected cash crops i.e. cashew, avocado and cotton. The lectures will cover basic production plan, farm management methods from seedling to first fruiting, business plan and principles for production success.

MODULE 6

Vegetable and Exotic Herbs Production in Green houses and hydroponic System

Smart farming model such as greenhouses, hydroponics and aeroponics help farmers to produce their desired crops all year round with the right agro climatic support system. With a bulging global demand for nutritious and body friendly herbs and vegetables such as kale, broccoli, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, basil, coriander, rosemary e.t.c., this module will provide a basic framework for setting up and managing smart farming systems for the herbs and vegetable production enterprises

MODULE 7

Trade Opportunities in Agro-Input Value Chains

Agrochemicals and livestock feed production represent a critical component of upstream agribusiness. Fertilizers, Seeds, herbicide, pesticides and machineries are the major support system for every successful crop production enterprise. Likewise, animal nutrition and healthcare products are pivotal to any successful livestock production enterprise. This module will expose participants to the gaps in the input market, the direction of trade and set up enterprise projects to maximizing the growth potentials in the input sub sector.

MODULE 8

Poultry Farming for Meat and Egg Production: Operations and Market Insight.

This module will give participants first hand insight into specific business models for commercial production of poultry birds for meat and eggs purposes. It will cover basic business plan, cost analysis and farm management practices for broilers and layers production enterprises. At the end of the module, participants will be equipped with the basic framework needed for starting and running poultry operations effectively.

MODULE 9

Cattle & Goat Farming for Meat and Milk Production: Operations and Market Insight

With a national population in excess of 200 million people, cattle and goats represents one of the major block suppliers of meat and milk to the diets of Nigerian consumers. This module will guide participants on the foundational blocks that need to be laid for a successful cattle and goat farming enterprise. The module will also provide basic business plan, cost analysis and critical success factors for the set up and smooth running of dairy and meat production operations with cattle and goats.

MODULE 10

Modern Food Processing and Post-Harvest Management

This module will cover production flow chart, standard operating procedures, factory layout, production formulation and basic business plan for the production of instant pounded yam flour, instant bean flour, roasted cassava flakes (garri), coconut oil, coconut flakes, dried fruit snacks, dried locust bean and plantain chips production. The module will also provide insight into specific procedures for NAFDAC registration for each of these product categories.

MODULE 11

Functional and Innovative Food Product Development

Think, Innovate and Create is the centre of the 21st century global food production industry. The rise in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular ailments, diabetes and obesity e.t.c is a burden on public health systems and a prompt for agrifood entrepreneurs to turn the creative curve and develop food products that can supply optimal nourishments, delay or reverse the onsets of NCDs. This module will guide participants on how to develop healthy meals, drinks and snack options to further enrich the diversity of offerings in the healthy diet range. Most participants will develop their class projects around this module.

MODULE 12

Strategic Branding for Agrifood Products

With new agrifood brands of local and international origin making it to the market every day, the precise implementation of a strategic branding plan is essential to the success of any food product. This module will guide participants on how to develop an effective branding framework that can create emotional connection between the product and the users. As the saying goes, the first bite is taken with the eye.

MODULE 13

Domestic and Export Market Development for Food Products

This Sales and Export Management module will guide participants on how to develop local and international market channels that will generate sufficient demands, sales and profit for their products and services. It will provide class members with frameworks for implementing sales technique that will drive revenue and increase market share.

MODULE 14

Financial Management of Agribusiness Operations

After all systems have been put in place for the smooth and efficient running of agribusiness operations, it is important for such operational plans to be executed with profitable margins in order to ensure business continuity and enterprise growth. This module will equip participants with financial management models that will help in ensuring accountability of operations, minimize risk expose and drive sustainable growth.
