DESCRIPTION OF MODULES

MODULE 1

Principles of Poultry Business Management

The module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the poultry industry, its trends, challenges and the various factors that affect the optimal performance of value chain operations in the industry. It is designed to give students an understanding of the poultry industry, its trends and challenges, as well as how to manage a poultry business. The module also covers global poultry economics, including the economics of poultry production, trade, and consumption. It also analyses the various components of the poultry industry and how they interact, in order to guide poultry managers in making strategic decisions that will grow and sustain their operations.

MODULE 2

Poultry Risk Management

One of the risks that affect the poultry industry is Disease outbreaks which can lead to significant losses in production and revenue, as well as additional costs associated with disease control and eradication. Another is Market fluctuations which can happen due to changes in supply and demand, as well as changes in consumer preferences. When this occurs, it can make it difficult for poultry businesses to plan for the future and to make informed decisions about production and marketing. Weather events such as floods, droughts, and storms can also cause significant damage to poultry farms and lead to losses in production and revenue. Indeed, there are several risks that can affect a poultry business and threaten its success. This module on Poultry Risk Management equip managers with frameworks for mitigating against inherent risks embedded in the poultry value chains. The module covers topics such as identifying and assessing risks, developing risk management plans, business continuity planning, crisis management, and food safety and biosecurity. By the end of the module, students will have a better understanding of how to manage risks and to make informed decisions that can minimize the impact of risks on the poultry business.

MODULE 3

Operations Management in Poultry Processing

The processing of poultry products involves a wide range of operational activities, from Live bird handling, Slaughtering and evisceration, Chilling, Cutting and boning, Grinding, mixing and forming into different products such as sausages, nuggets, nuggets and burgers, Packaging and labeling, Maintenance and equipment management e.t.c. These operations requires a high level of coordination, management, and attention to detail to ensure that the products are safe, of high quality, and meet customer demands. This module is designed to give students an understanding of the poultry processing operations and how to manage them effectively. It emphasizes on the importance of implementing best practices, utilizing technology, and ensuring food safety and quality control. Ultimately, the students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to manage poultry processing operations and to make strategic decisions that can drive growth and profitability.

MODULE 4

Operations Management in Commercial Poultry Production

Commercial poultry production involves a wide range of processes and activities that are essential for the successful production of poultry products. These include: Breeding and hatchery management, Feed management, Poultry house management, Poultry health management, Farm productivity management, Farm environmental management e.t.c. Overall, commercial poultry farming is a complex and multifaceted operation that requires a wide range of skills and knowledge, including management, technical expertise, and attention to detail. It requires a high level of coordination, management, and attention to detail to ensure successful production of poultry products at every farm cycle. This module will equip students with operations management tools and techniques for improving efficiency and productivity in poultry production such as Lean and Six Sigma principles, automation, and data management. It will also expose students to the use of technology in monitoring and controlling the farm’s operations, such as temperature and ventilation control systems, feed and water management systems, and data analytics.

MODULE 5

Digital Transformation in Poultry Value Chains

Digital transformation is changing the face of the poultry business globally by introducing new technologies and digital tools that are helping poultry value chain actors to improve efficiency, increase productivity, and reduce costs. Digital technologies such as automation and precision farming are being used to automate tasks such as feed and water management, temperature control, and ventilation. This is helping farmers to reduce labor costs and increase efficiency. Digital tools such as data analytics, big data, and IoT (Internet of Things) devices are being used to collect and analyze data on everything from feed consumption to egg production. This is helping farmers to make more informed decisions about how to manage their operations. Digital traceability tools are also being used to trace and track poultry products from the farm to the consumer, which is helping to improve food safety, reduce the risk of disease outbreaks, and increase transparency in the supply chain while Remote Monitoring digital tools are allowing farmers to monitor their farms remotely, which provides them with the ability to detect and solve problems in real time, thereby reducing downtime and increasing efficiency. Overall, digital transformation is the present and future of effective poultry business operations and this module will equip students with digital tools that can help in transforming productivity in poultry value chains.

MODULE 6

Business Analytics and Big Data in Agribusiness

Business analytics is the process of using data, statistical algorithms, and other techniques to extract insights and knowledge from data, which can be used to inform business decisions while Big data refers to the large and complex data sets that are generated by organizations today, and the technologies and techniques used to store, process, and analyze this data. This module will provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to analyze large and complex data sets and extract insights that can be used to make informed business decisions in the agribusiness industry. These analytical skills will help students of the program to be more effective in their roles and make a positive impact on the industry.

MODULE 7

Poultry Sales and Marketing Management

There are various dynamics that influence effective execution of sales and marketing strategies in the poultry industry. Some of these include sensitivity to seasonality, market trend, changing consumer demand, economic conditions, government regulations, technological advancements, competition, distribution and logistics. Sales and marketing professionals in the poultry industry need to be aware of these dynamics and adapt their products and marketing strategies accordingly in order to stay on top of the game. This module will cover strategic topics that can help poultry sales managers to excel in their roles and add values to their organization’s financial and business bottom lines. Some of the topics covered in the curriculum include market research and analysis, marketing planning and strategy, product development and positioning, sales and distribution, advertising and promotion, digital marketing and food safety and regulations. This module aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop and execute effective marketing strategies for the poultry industry.

MODULE 8

Food and Nutrition Entrepreneurship

This course will provide students with an understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges of starting and growing a nutrition-based business. The course will cover topics such as nutrition across human life cycle, innovative product development of wellness products for each niche of the human life cycle, market research, branding, marketing, and financial management. Students will also learn about the latest trends in nutrition and health and how to apply them to a business context. By the end of the course, students will have the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and launch a successful nutrition-based business. During the course, the students will be required to complete hands-on-projects by developing innovative food and wellness products and pitch them to a virtual mock investment audience.

MODULE 9

Strategic Management of Poultry Business

This course would equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make strategic decisions that drive the growth and success of a poultry business. It would also help poultry managers to understand the key principles and practices of strategic management and how they can be applied to the poultry industry. Some of the topics in the module include Business and industry analysis where students will learn how to analyze the poultry industry and its key players, as well as the external factors that can impact the industry, Strategic Planning and execution where students will learn how to develop and execute strategic plans that align with the overall goals and objectives of the poultry business, Competitive strategy where students will learn about the various competitive strategies that poultry businesses can employ, such as cost leadership, differentiation, and market niche strategies, Human Resources Management where students will learn about the importance of human resources management in poultry businesses, including recruitment, training, and employee motivation, Innovation and entrepreneurship where students will learn about the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in the poultry industry, and how to create a culture of innovation within the organization among other topics.

MODULE 10

International Agribusiness Economics, Policy and Trade

This module covers the trade policies and agreements that affect the agribusiness industry, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and regional trade agreements such as African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The module will also provide an overview of the economic principles and theories that govern the global agribusiness industry, including trade patterns, demand and supply analysis, and market structure. Students of this module will also be engaged with an International trade simulation project where they will have an opportunity to participate in a simulated international trade negotiation and to develop their negotiation skills.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOURS

The study trip is an important component of our MBA Poultry Enterprise Management Program. During the trip, students will visit the following places:

  • Poultry farms: Students would visit a variety of poultry farms to observe and learn about the various aspects of poultry production, including breeding, feeding, housing, and health management.
  • Poultry processing companies: Students would visit poultry processing plants to learn about the different stages of poultry processing, from slaughter to packaging and distribution. They would also learn about food safety, quality control, and supply chain management.
  • Hatcheries: Students would visit hatcheries to learn about the processes involved in producing day-old chicks, including incubation, hatching, and chick care.
  • Feed mills: Students would visit feed mills to learn about the production of poultry feed, including the sourcing of raw materials, the mixing of ingredients, and the packaging of the finished product.
  • Poultry equipment manufacturers: Students would visit companies that manufacture poultry equipment such as poultry housing, feeding systems, and climate control systems.
  • Poultry veterinary clinics and research centers: Students would learn about the veterinary aspects of poultry production including disease prevention and treatment, vaccination, and genetic improvement.
  • Poultry marketing and distribution companies: Students would visit poultry marketing and distribution companies to learn about the different strategies and channels used to market and distribute poultry products.
  • Meetings with industry leaders: Students will have the opportunity to meet with industry leaders and learn about the latest trends and challenges facing the poultry industry.

RESEARCH

All the students on the MBA Poultry Enterprise Management conduct in-depth and independent research on themes of their choice within the poultry industry. The outputs of these researches have been valuable to the global industry by helping professionals to improve the quality of their practices.

DURATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The duration of the program is ONE YEAR. The program has two entries annually; in March and September. The blended mode of the program allows professionals to combine their full time work engagement with their studies seamlessly. During the international study module, participants will spend one week at any of our partner institutions in other African countries to immerse themselves into the dynamics of export activities in that environment. During this international session, participants will learn firsthand management of food business operations from a different cultural orientation. They will also gain global exposure and build new business relationships. The choice of the country for the international study module will change in every academic session of the program and would be determined by the program directorate.

DOUBLE CERTIFICATION

In a unique structure of integrated curriculum and collaborative learning, graduates of the MBA Poultry Enterprise Management also automatically earn an Executive Diploma in Agribusiness Leadership from Nigerian College of Agribusiness. This double Certification continues to put graduates of the program in an elite league of poultry business leaders. The curriculum and structure of the two programs are already integrated, so students do not have to do any extra work or pay extra fees.

FINAL DEGREE AWARD

Graduates of this program earn an MBA Poultry Enterprise Management degree of Lead City University, Ibadan. They also earn an Executive Diploma in Agribusiness Leadership from Nigerian College of Agribusiness, an NBTE accredited awarding body under the National Skill Qualification Framework

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Candidates seeking admission to the PGD Agricultural Export Operations and Trade Management program must have minimum of an HND/BSc qualification from recognized institutions. Holders of professional qualifications such as ACCA, ACIB, ANAN e.t.c can also apply.

NEXT START DATE AND APPLICATION DEADLINE

The next start date for the 2023/2024 Academic Session is March 7, 2023. Admission screening exercise will be conducted for all applicants. Due to the limited class size for each cohort, early application is advised
