Course Overview

The Cassava Production, Processing, and Profitability Program (CP3) is a strategic learning platform for entrepreneurs, processors, investors, and agribusiness leaders who want to compete in Africa’s fast-evolving cassava economy. Cassava is no longer treated as a subsistence crop. It is a commercial commodity with rising demand across food, feed, energy, and industrial markets. The enterprises that will lead this transformation are those that combine agronomic innovation, precision farm management, and efficient processing models with clear profitability strategies.

CP3 focuses on the critical levers that define competitiveness in cassava. Participants will study data-driven agronomy for higher yields, improved soil and input management, and precision technologies that reduce production inefficiencies. The program explores processing optimization across starch, flour, ethanol, and derivative products, with a focus on cost reduction, quality standards, and scalability. Attention is also given to market intelligence, branding, and consumer behavior insights that determine how cassava products can penetrate and succeed in premium retail and industrial supply chains.

Delivered in a practical executive format, CP3 combines business strategy, financial modeling, and value chain analysis with real-world case studies from emerging cassava enterprises in Africa and global leaders such as Thailand. Participants will engage with frameworks that help identify margins across the value chain, structure investment-ready business models, and build enterprises resilient to climate, price, and market volatility.

Graduates of CP3 will be equipped to drive yield improvements at farm level, efficiency gains in processing, and strategic positioning in domestic and export markets. They will emerge as cassava leaders capable of creating competitive, profitable, and sustainable enterprises that set the standard for Africa’s agrifood economy.

Program Structure

Module 1

Executive Classroom Sessions (December 8-10, 2025)

Participants will build a strategic foundation for profitable cassava enterprises by engaging directly with practical models and data-driven insights. By the end of this module, they will have clear strategies that link agronomic innovation, post-harvest efficiency, and industrial processing into viable business models.

Key learning areas include:

  1. Agronomy and Farm Management Innovation: participants will be exposed to the latest high-yield cassava varieties, irrigation systems, and mechanization models that consistently deliver yields far above current national averages. They will also study enterprise-level farm planning, input optimization, and data-driven production systems.
  1. Post-Harvest Operations: participants will analyze how to design cost-effective peeling, drying, and storage systems that reduce losses of up to 30 percent typically seen in cassava value chains, while ensuring a reliable supply of quality raw material.
  2. Processing and Industrial Applications: participants will study commercial models for processing cassava into garri, high-quality cassava starch (HQCS), high-quality cassava flour (HQCF), ethanol, and glucose, with a focus on plant efficiency, quality compliance, and market demand.
  3. Enterprise and Investment Strategy: participants will learn how to structure cassava businesses for profitability, including financial modeling, investment readiness, and risk management tailored to agrifood enterprises.
  4. Markets and Branding: participants will evaluate how cassava-based products can gain a competitive edge in local and export markets through market intelligence, branding strategies, and industrial linkages.

Module 2

Farm and Factory Visits and Immersion (December 11-13, 2025)

Participants will be exposed to practical exposure through guided field visits and enterprise-level demonstrations. Each visit is structured to help participants benchmark best practices and design strategies for their own operations.

Focus areas include:

  1. Commercial Cassava Farms: participants will see firsthand how improved cassava varieties, irrigation systems, mechanized land preparation, and precision farm management deliver higher yields and lower costs per hectare.
  1. Processing Plants: participants will tour facilities producing garri, High Quality Cassava Starch, High Quality Cassava Flour, ethanol, and glucose, learning how to manage plant efficiency, enforce quality standards, and scale up production profitably.
  2. Post-Harvest Systems: participants will observe practical drying, peeling, and storage innovations that extend shelf life, reduce waste, and improve raw material quality for processors.
  3. Market and Retail Linkages: participants will engage with cassava-based food brands and distribution channels to understand how consumer demand, product aesthetics, and branding influence competitiveness on retail shelves and in industrial supply chains.
